PETALING JAYA: Khairul Idham Pawi continued his great run in the FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship with a double podium finish in the third round at the Catalunya Circuit in Spain.
The 16-year-old Malaysian rookie, who came in second in the previous round at the Le Mans Circuit in France last month, started from the front row in Race 1 on Sunday.
The Honda Team Asia rider pushed hard for victory from the start of the 16-lap race and crossed the line in second place in 30:03.480, just 0.083 seconds behind of Aron Canet of Spain (30:03.397). Italian Nicolo Bulega got the last podium spot (30:05.162).
Later in Race 2, Khairul took the early lead but could not hang on and eventually settled for third behind Canet and winner Joan Mayrata of Spain.
The Perak-born rider, who was third quickest in qualifying on Saturday, was pleased to post his first double podium finish for the weekend.
“I was caught in traffic and missed pole by half a second yesterday. But today I’m happy we displayed a competitive pace in the race,” said Khairul.
Khairul is now second in the overall standings on 63 points. Canet, who also won in Le Mans, is on top with 90 points.
Meanwhile, Ramdan Rosli’s outing in the Moto2 European Championship came to an early end when he crashed out after just two laps.
The Petronas AHM Motorsports rider qualified eighth for the 17-lap race on Saturday.
